Student Representatives on MPS School Board

Applications to become a Student Board Representative will open October 7th! 

The goal of the student representative is to provide insight from a student lense, and, to support and enhance the Board's understanding of student issues and how students experience their education. To expand student voice and to share the responsibility of students serving in an adult space, the decision was made to have two students share the role beginning the 2023 term. This model will continue for term 2024.

TIPS FOR APPLYING:

  • Read ALL information and questions carefully
  • Mark your calendar for the November 28th interivew date!
  • Notify your references (Two adult, one peer)
  • Ask a trusted adult to support you
  • Reach out to Janae or Jenny in Student Engagement or current Student Representatives with any questions

ALL Interviews will be held Monday, December 4th from 6:00-7:00pm.

In this role, students will serve as “ex officio members,” meaning they are encouraged to participate in discussions, but may not vote on them. The students will be recognized in board discussions in the same manner as directors.
 

Eligibility & Responsibilities:

  • Any MPS Sophomore or Junior
  • Speak to the interested of ALL Minneapolis Public School students
  • Effective communicator
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with adults and peers
  • Desire to increase student voice in the educational experience
  • Understanding of varying student identities and perspectives
  • An interest in governmental process

Time Commitment: 

  • Commit to serving a One-YEAR term the first board meeting in January through the last board meeting in December of their respective year.
  • Attend two monthly school board meetings, typically the second Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to approximately 10:00 p.m. and the fourth Tuesday from approximately 6:00pm-8:00pm (this could include meetings during the summer)
  • Attend and actively participate in CityWide Student Leadership Board meetings, which typically meet every other Monday.
  • Familiarize themselves with agenda and board material prior to attending the meetings.
  • Regularly meet with board mentor for check-ins
  • Student reps will take turns sitting on the dais and being responsible for speaking at that meeting. The other student rep can choose to attend as well, though it is not required, but they will be responsible for the content covered in all meetings. The exact schedule is available at https://board.mpls.k12.mn.us.
  • Optional events will be shared throughout the term based on interests.

Selection Processs 
All applicants will go through an application and interview review process. Interviews will be condcuted by CityWide Student Leadership Board members, CityWide Advisors, and former Student Representatives.
