Extended Learning Positions-ALC

GEMS-GISE STEM K-5 Courses

Project Based Learning Math (Gr K-1):  Create, Problem Solve, Learn about LOTS of Buttons, Robots, Caterpillars, Butterflies AND Build Math Skills! Experience hands-on projects, meet with teachers and friends! (Content focus: Math and Science)

Coding-Engineering (Gr K-3): Learn coding and engineering to create interactive stories, design animations and games, build apps, and make incredible projects. Students explore the engineering process by designing their own Hexbug sumo bots with attachments. (Content focus: Integrated STEM)

STEM Explorer (Gr K-3): Design and Engineer your own STEMspiration projects! The Explore Projects include STEM learning through constructing and redesigning a tilting maze, bird feeder, musical instrument, parachutes, and large structures. In STEM Explorer you will create, discover and innovate! (Content focus: Engineering and Science)

KoolFit-2four7 (Gr K-5):  Get active with KoolFit-2four7! Participate in a wide variety of dynamic fitness, recreation and wellness classes. Explore how science and technology unite with KoolFit-2four7! All district issued or personal devices will work. The equipment for grade levels varies. (Content focus: Science, Technology, Physical Education, and Wellness)

STEM Stories (Gr K-5):  Explore STEM concepts through both fiction and non-fiction picture books. Then become the scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians through exciting hands-on experiments and activities you discovered in the books you have read! (Content focus: STEM and Reading/Language Arts)

Cultural Immersion (Gr K-5):  Start date to be determined. Program description to be available at a later date.

Project Based Learning Math (Gr 2-3):  Create, Problem Solve, Learn about Wasps, Bees, Zoo Animals AND Build Math Skills! Experience hands-on projects, meet with teachers and friends! (Content focus: Math and Science)

Camp Invention (Gr 3-5):  Explore the value of creativity as you bring your biggest ideas to life through Design Thinking! Successful entrepreneurs create sketches, build prototypes, design logos and market their products while protecting their intellectual property. Be the designer and creator of your own inventions! You will use your imagination in Flight Lab as you investigate flight with paper planes, gliders, rockets, heliballs and hand-copters. In Design A Sports Arena you trade inventor playing cards, create and play your own high-energy hover-ball games, then design and build the ultimate sports complex! Using your problem solving skills you will also discover ways to protect the Earth’s ecosystems. Activities include competing in zipline races, exploring energy conservation, eliminating pollution and helping wildlife in habitats across the country.

Roller Coaster Science (Gr 3-5):  Have you ever ridden a roller coaster? Have you ever wanted to design your own? Explore how to use science and engineering design to build a working model roller coaster. Examine what the top roller coasters have in common. Learn about what makes a roller coaster work and creatively design your optimal ride and amusement park attraction! Create a video of your roller coaster in action! (Content focus: Science and Engineering)

Biomedical (Gr 4-5):  Investigate Biomedical Science. Students will explore the science of DNA through engaging hands-on modeling/simulation activities and experiments involving hair, fingerprints, blood type, eye characteristics, and infectious disease. This class will offer students an opportunity to work with real scientists as part of their investigations. (Content focus: Science and Technology)

Explore Robotics (Gr 4-5):  Learn about mechanical design, construction, programming, and teamwork skills. Construct your MBot robot prototype using building elements, motors, and sensors. Program robots with the computer to move, react, and make sounds. Utilize prototypes and programming skills to solve design challenges. Teams will program their MBot for the Mars Challenge and competitively code using CoderZ EV3 simulations. Note: MBot and Mars Mat provided; programming software is web-based so students will use their MPS issued Chromebooks/Laptops. (Content Focus: Engineering, Computer Science and STEM)

Natural Systems (Gr 4-5):  Investigate the Natural Pathways in our environment. Students will explore food webs, owl pellets, camouflage and mimicry, invasive species, oil spills, and sustainability through engaging hands-on activities and experiments. This class will offer students an opportunity to work with real scientists as part of their investigations. (Content focus: Science and Technology)

Project Based Learning Math (Gr 4-5):  Create, Problem Solve, Learn about Pets, Zookeepers, Disney/Cartoon Characters AND Build Math Skills! Experience hands-on projects, meet with teachers and friends! (Content focus: Math and Science)

STEM Creator (Gr 4-5):  Design and Engineer your own STEM projects! The Create Projects include STEM learning through constructing and redesigning catapults, balloon cars, Da Vinci bridges, inventions, and friction climbers. In STEM Creator you will explore, discover and innovate! (Content focus: Engineering and Science)

GEMS-GISE STEM 6-8 Courses

Architectural Design (Gr 6-8):  Integrated engineering and design that answers affordability and sustainability needed for the 21st century. Everything you need in less than 200 square feet: learn the basics of architecture, design, construction, electrical engineering and plumbing. Join us in taking the tiny house design challenge! (Content focus: Math, Science and Engineering)

Explore Robotics (Gr 6-8):  Exploration and Dynamic Application of Robotics and Computer Science with leading-edge tech (MBots) and software (makeblock) through mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. After constructing an MBot prototype using building elements, motors and sensors, students will: 1) design, construct and modify a variety of attachments and 2) use makeblock programming to solve increasing complex challenges on their Mars Mat. Using CoderZ student teams will competitively code EV3 simulations. Note: MBot and Mars Mat provided; programming software is web-based so students will use their MPS issued Chromebooks/Laptops. Invention Project (Gr 6-8):  Invention is much more than a eureka moment! With Invention Project®, students can learn the business of innovation, from prototype to product launch. Through high-energy, hands-on activities, our program empowers each participant to turn ideas into inventions, and find out how to bring those inventions to market. Inspire to share your creativity and innovations! (Content focus: Engineering and Art)

Powerful Words & Powerful Images (Gr 6-8):  Middle school students will use their life experiences, voice, creativity, and ideas, to develop, write, design, edit and e-publish STEM books for younger students in MPS. Learn photography, illustration, and book design elements to engage young readers. (Content: STEM, English/Language Arts, Art)

Sonic Pi Studio (Gr 6-8):  In this course you will explore music through recording, editing and composing using the program Soundtrap. While exploring music through these different digital and electronic processing projects, students will also learn about the acoustics, math, electronics, and physics behind their creative endeavor. (Content focus: Music and Engingeering)

STEM Innovator (Gr 6-8):  Design and Engineer your own STEM projects! The Innovator Projects include STEM learning through constructing and redesigning catapults, trebuchets, kites, and solar cars. In STEM Innovator you will explore, discover and create! (Content focus: Engineering and Science)
