Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) Student Engagement hosts a math competition for 5th and 6th graders. The competitions consist of both individual and team rounds that cover a variety of mathematic skills aligned with the district’s math standards.
2016 5th & 6th Grade Math Competition
Saturday, May 6th, 2017
North High School (1500 James Ave N, Minneapolis MN 55411) – Team check-in begins at 8:30am
Details of the individual competition:
Students will be given three minutes to complete a warm-up fact drill. They will then participate in five 12-minute rounds, each including eight questions. The first and second rounds will focus on space, shape and measurement knowledge as well as number sense. In the third and fourth rounds, students will examine patterns, relations and functions; data and uncertainty data investigations; and randomness and uncertainty.
Details of the group competition:
Teams of four students will participate in three 15-minute group problem-solving rounds, each including eight questions. Each team will submit a single answer sheet for judging.
All participating students will receive ribbons recognizing their involvement in the event. Individual ribbons are awarded to the top scorers in the fact drill, individual round and team round. Winning teams receive plaques for their schools, and winning team members receive additional ribbons.
This competition is for Minneapolis Public Schools Only. Registration will be available February 2017.
